Supermarket versus Farmers Market

Supermarket versus Farmers Market

Shopping in a supermarket surrounded by fluorescent lighting and buzzing fridges is more about choosing packaging and labels than being lured food you might like to eat. Getting the ordeal over with as soon as possible  becomes the objective, so grabbing the familiar products, picking up the two for one offers and buying much more than you came in for becomes the norm. At the checkout tetchy cashiers working long, badly paid hours are not much fun to talk to and the automatic checkout can drive you to distraction. Then there’s the added chore of recycling packaging or having to throw it away. It’s a wearing unpleasant experience which doesn’t nurture body or soul.

Contrast this with a farmers market where you can touch and smell colourful food and talk to the producers about how it’s grown. They take pride in displaying the high quality and beautiful produce on their stands. It can be more expensive but in general you buy less of because it’s tastier and more satisfying. You return home knowing you’ve made conscious, considered choices and have had a good experience.
